  1. Step 01

    Install from the Shopify App Store

    Open the listing and click "Add app." You'll be asked to authenticate against your Shopify store and approve the requested scopes (catalog read, orders read, fulfilments read, draft orders write, etc.).

    The full scopes list is visible on the App Store install page — every permission is needed for either catalog awareness, order tracking, or cart actions. We don't request anything we don't use.

  2. Step 02

    Name your agent

    Pick a name and avatar. Defaults work fine ("Clarity") but most merchants brand the agent to match their store voice — "Stella" for a clothing brand, "Buddy" for a casual one.

    You can change the name later from Settings without losing conversation history.

  3. Step 03

    Pick a personality

    Friendly, professional, casual, or witty. This sets the tone of the agent's replies — friendly leans warm, professional is concise and formal, casual uses contractions and emoji, witty leans toward playful.

    You can also write custom instructions if none of the four presets match your brand voice.

  4. Step 04

    Catalog auto-syncs

    Clearly Agent reads your products, variants, inventory, prices, and policies via the Shopify API. The first sync runs in the background and finishes in ~30 seconds for stores under 10K SKUs.

    Subsequent updates are real-time via Shopify webhooks — when you change a price or add a product, the agent picks it up within seconds.

  5. Step 05

    Storefront widget activates automatically

    The theme app extension goes live the moment install finishes. The chat widget appears on every page of your storefront — bottom-right by default. You can change widget position, accent color, and font from Appearance.

    No theme code edits needed. The extension is sandboxed; it can't modify your theme files.

  6. Step 06

    Test before customers see it (optional)

    Hide the storefront widget and run "Test Chat" from the admin to talk to the agent privately. When you're happy with the responses, flip the widget back on and customers can start chatting.

    Test Chat uses the same agent + same catalog as production — what you see is what your customers will see.

Next steps

  • Tune the agent — Settings → Custom Instructions lets you write store-specific rules (return policy quirks, brand voice, escalation triggers).
  • Upload a knowledge base — FAQs, sizing guides, fitment charts. Knowledge → Upload. The agent uses these as context on every conversation.
  • Customize appearance — Appearance → Widget style (floating vs docked), accent color, font, avatar. Match your storefront brand.
  • Watch analytics — Analytics → Daily activity, conversation count, and conversion attribution.
  • Add live chat — Upgrade to Clearly Pro to take over conversations mid-thread when a customer needs a human.
