Free vs Designer Edition

The biggest gotcha with Silhouette Studio is that SVG support requires a paid upgrade. Here's what each edition offers:

Basic Edition (Free)

  • + Opens .studio3 files (Silhouette's native format)
  • + Opens DXF files
  • + Basic shapes and text tools
  • - Cannot open SVG files
  • - No SVG import or merge

Designer Edition ($49.99 one-time)

  • + Full SVG file support (open, merge, import)
  • + Offset tool (expand/shrink cut lines)
  • + Compound path editing
  • + Knife tool for splitting designs
  • + Rhinestone tools
  • + Advanced layer management

If you frequently work with SVG files, the Designer Edition upgrade is essential. It's a one-time purchase, not a subscription.

How to Open SVG Files

1

File → Open (or Merge)

Use File → Open to open the SVG in a new workspace. Use File → Merge to add the SVG to your current workspace without losing existing work. Merge is more common when combining multiple designs.

2

Set File Type to SVG

In the file browser, change the file type dropdown from "Silhouette Studio Files" to "SVG Files" or "All Files." Navigate to your SVG and select it.

3

Verify the Import

The SVG appears on your workspace. Check that all elements imported correctly. If the design has multiple colors, each color group should appear as a separate layer in the right panel.

4

Check Cut Lines

Switch to the "Send" tab to preview cut lines (shown in red). Make sure the cut lines follow the design edges. If cut lines are missing, select the design and choose "Cut Edge" in the Cut Settings.

Editing SVGs in Silhouette Studio

Designer Edition includes powerful editing tools that work well with imported SVGs:

Offset tool

Creates a border around your design at a specified distance. Essential for making stickers with a white border or adding weeding lines for vinyl.

Ungroup and modify

Right-click → Ungroup to break apart the SVG into individual elements. You can then delete, move, recolor, or resize individual pieces.

Knife tool

Draw a line across the design to split it into separate pieces. Useful for multi-color vinyl where you need to cut each color layer separately.

Compound paths

Make Compound Path creates cutouts (like the hole in a letter "O"). Release Compound Path separates joined paths into individual shapes.

Cut Settings by Material

Settings vary by machine model and material brand. Always do a test cut first.

Troubleshooting

Can't open SVG (greyed out)

You're using Basic Edition. Upgrade to Designer Edition ($49.99) to enable SVG support. Check under Help → About Silhouette Studio to verify your edition.

SVG appears blank or corrupted

The SVG may contain unsupported elements. Try opening it in a browser first to verify it's valid. Re-save from another program, or generate a clean SVG from Clearly.

Text looks wrong

The SVG has live text that uses fonts not installed on your computer. Ask the SVG creator to convert text to outlines/paths before saving. AI-generated SVGs from Clearly always use outlined text.

No cut lines showing

Select the design and check the Cut Settings panel. The design might be set to "No Cut." Change it to "Cut" or "Cut Edge." If it's an embedded image, the SVG needs to be a true vector for cut lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Designer Edition to open SVG files in Silhouette Studio?

Yes. The free Basic Edition of Silhouette Studio cannot open SVG files. You need the Designer Edition upgrade ($49.99 one-time) or higher (Designer Edition Plus or Business Edition) to import SVGs. The Basic Edition only opens Silhouette's native .studio3 format and DXF files.

How do I open an SVG file in Silhouette Studio?

With Designer Edition or higher: Go to File → Open, change the file type filter to SVG, navigate to your file, and click Open. Alternatively, go to File → Merge to add the SVG to an existing workspace without replacing your current design.

What is the difference between Silhouette Studio and Cricut Design Space for SVGs?

Key differences: 1) Silhouette requires a paid upgrade for SVG support, Cricut Design Space supports SVG for free. 2) Silhouette Studio has more built-in editing tools (offset, compound paths, knife tool). 3) Cricut uses cloud-based software, Silhouette is desktop-only. 4) Both produce excellent cuts from well-made SVGs.

Why does my SVG look different in Silhouette Studio?

Common reasons: 1) Text wasn't converted to outlines (fonts appear substituted), 2) The SVG uses CSS styling that Studio doesn't fully support, 3) Embedded images show as placeholders, 4) Some gradients or effects are stripped. For best results, use SVGs with outlined text and inline styles.
