Paper Collage Art

Collage entered fine art when Pablo Picasso glued a piece of oil-cloth to his painting Still Life with Chair Caning (1912), and Georges Braque pasted wallpaper into his Cubist compositions the same year. The French word "coller" (to glue) gave the technique its name. What started as a Cubist experiment — breaking the sacred surface of the canvas with everyday materials — became one of modern art's most revolutionary techniques.

Dada and Surrealist artists pushed collage further: Hannah Höch's photomontages (Cut with the Kitchen Knife, 1919–20) used newspaper clippings to savage Weimar Republic politics. Kurt Schwitters built his Merzbau from urban detritus. Max Ernst's collage novels assembled Victorian engravings into surreal narratives. By mid-century, Robert Rauschenberg's "combines" merged painting with everyday objects, bridging Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art.

Digital collage tools have expanded the medium enormously, but the core principle remains: combining disparate elements to create new meaning through juxtaposition. From David Hockney's Polaroid composites to Instagram mood boards, collage thinking permeates contemporary visual culture.
