The style entered mainstream tattooing in the 1990s through LA-based artists who recognized the technique's artistic potential. Mark Mahoney of Shamrock Social Club became known as the "godfather of black and grey" and single-needle work, tattooing celebrities and elevating the technique's reputation. Dr. Woo, who apprenticed under Mahoney, became the most recognized fine line tattoo artist in the world through Instagram, with his micro-realistic botanical, geometric, and portrait work amassing millions of followers.

The 2010s saw fine line tattooing explode into one of the most popular styles globally. Artists like Mr. K (Bang Bang NYC), Curt Montgomery, and Playground Tattoo (Seoul) pushed the boundaries of what single-needle work could achieve — miniature landscapes, architectural renderings, and photorealistic portraits at fingernail scale. The style's delicate, jewelry-like quality appeals particularly to first-time tattoo clients and has helped destigmatize tattooing across demographics.
