Script Lettering Art

Script lettering descends from the calligraphic traditions that preceded and survived the printing press. The humanist cursive (cancellaresca) developed in 15th-century Italy by Niccolo de' Niccoli became the foundation for italic typefaces. English Roundhand and copperplate scripts (17th–18th centuries) — written with flexible pointed nibs that produced thick-thin variation through pressure — established the flowing, connected aesthetic that defines script lettering today.

The 20th century saw script lettering flourish in commercial signage, brand logos, and advertising. Coca-Cola's Spencerian script logo (1887, refined by Frank Mason Robinson) became one of the most recognized letterforms in history. Herb Lubalin's work at ITC in the 1970s pushed expressive script into modernist territory. The calligraphy revival of the 1970s–80s, led by Hermann Zapf and Lloyd Reynolds, renewed interest in historical writing systems.

The 2010s Instagram calligraphy boom brought script lettering to a massive new audience. Artists like Seb Lester (whose viral videos of historical script recreation garnered millions of views), Jessica Hische, and Molly Jacques transformed calligraphy from a niche craft into a cultural phenomenon. Today, script lettering is essential for wedding design, luxury branding, and any context where elegance and personality are paramount.
