Flat Design Art

Flat design's immediate catalyst was Microsoft's Metro design language (2010), which rejected skeuomorphism — the practice of making digital interfaces mimic real-world textures like leather, wood grain, and brushed metal. When Apple followed with iOS 7 (2013), stripping away virtually all skeuomorphic elements in favor of clean typography, solid colors, and translucent layers, flat design became the dominant visual language of digital products overnight.

The aesthetic roots, however, run much deeper. The Swiss International Typographic Style (1950s–60s), championed by Josef Müller-Brockmann and Armin Hofmann, established the grid-based, sans-serif, photography-over-illustration approach that flat design inherits. The Bauhaus before it (1919–33) advocated "form follows function." And the entire trajectory of modernist graphic design — from Jan Tschichold's "New Typography" (1928) to Massimo Vignelli's New York subway map (1972) — pointed toward the radical simplification that flat design represents.

Google's Material Design (2014) introduced a "flat-plus" approach, adding subtle shadows and motion to pure flatness. Today, flat illustration has become the default visual language for tech companies, SaaS products, and startup branding. Illustrators like Alice Lee (Slack, Airbnb) and Pablo Stanley (Humaaans) have defined the contemporary flat illustration style — friendly, inclusive, geometric characters that communicate complex concepts without visual noise.
